From Texel to Tech Leader: MAV Mike Dijker’s ProAV Legacy (Netherlands)

From a teenage tech enthusiast on Texel Island to the founder of the Netherlands’ leading proAV firm, Mike Dijker’s journey is one of passion, dedication, and innovation. His company, MAV Techniek B.V., has become synonymous with excellence in audiovisual installations, particularly in the museum sector. In an exclusive interview, Dijker shares his story and insights into the industry that has been his lifelong passion.

Getting Started: A Passion Ignited Early

Mike Dijker’s fascination with audiovisual equipment began at a young age. By 15, he was already working at a shop selling TVs, radios, and other electronics, gaining hands-on experience by installing these devices in customers’ homes. His early career was a blend of retail and practical installation, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavors.

At 19, Dijker moved to Amsterdam, where he joined IDTV, a television production company. There, he managed audiovisual equipment, handled internal rentals, and maintained off-line editing sets. This role expanded his expertise and exposed him to the broader landscape of the audiovisual industry. After 3.5 years, Dijker transitioned to Capi Lux Vak’s audiovisual rental department, further honing his skills before taking a bold step towards entrepreneurship.

The Birth of MAV Techniek: A Spontaneous Decision

On February 2, 2000, Mike Dijker founded MAV Techniek, driven by a spontaneous idea following the takeover of his department by another AV company. Initially, he freelanced, saving to buy his own equipment and gradually building a rental service for presentation sets. This entrepreneurial spirit and gradual growth set the stage for MAV Techniek’s specialization in projection and complex audiovisual installations.

“We didn’t have too many challenges early on,” Dijker recalls. “The biggest one was always finding the right people for the right job. But now, I have a wonderful team where everyone has their own specialty, and we all make it work together.”

Specializing in Museums: Creativity and Dedication

MAV Techniek’s reputation in the museum and exhibition sector is unparalleled. Dijker’s team is known for their love of the creative process and their ability to think outside the box. “We love our job and are very dedicated to making the best experience for museum visitors,” he says. Flexibility and adaptability are key, as exhibitions often evolve over time, requiring constant adjustments.

One of the most challenging and successful projects for MAV was the multi-projection installation at the Military Museum for the F-16. This project showcased the power and precision of GeoBox, a core technology for video processing that has become integral to MAV’s success. “The multi-projection setup for the F-16 was a significant achievement, and GeoBox was essential in making it happen,” Dijker explains.

Embracing Technology: GeoBox at the Core

MAV Techniek prides itself on keeping up with the latest technologies. “We were among the first in the Netherlands to use GeoBox, and it has become a staple for multi-screen or 360-degree projections,” Dijker notes. GeoBox’s capabilities have revolutionized how MAV approaches complex installations, making it a key component of their future success. Their niche market focus includes exploring unique equipment, such as small circular LCD screens with or without touch functionality, ranging from 4 to 36 inches.

Commitment to Excellence in the proAV Industry

Effective collaboration is crucial for MAV’s success. Dijker emphasizes the importance of knowing designers and decor builders, facilitating smooth communication and open discussions. “I like straight lines of communication and open discussions so everybody knows what is going on,” he explains.

The proAV industry has seen significant changes, particularly in sustainability. MAV has adapted by transitioning from lamp to laser projectors, reducing chemical waste and energy consumption. Technological advancements, like the GeoBox, have also made their work more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Client Satisfaction is at the heart of MAV Techniek’s operations. “We don’t finish until it’s 100% perfect and the customer is satisfied,” Dijker asserts. This commitment to excellence has earned them a stellar reputation in the industry. While MAV Techniek is not focused on significant growth, Dijker plans to maintain their high standards and personal, flat organizational structure. “We like the way we work and want to keep our service highly valued by our customers,” he says.
