Verticle deep dive
GeoBox helps to bring the Silla Kingdom to life at Gyeongju World Culture Expo
VNS Inc. and its Korean distributor Electrosmith have collaborated with Korean integrator EASYWITH (www.easywith.com) to build three permanent interactive displays using GeoBox edge-blending processors, at the 10th annual Korea Gyeongju World Culture Expo, currently taking place at Gyeongju International Culture Expo Park in Gyeongju. The expo focuses on promoting diverse cultures, and this year’s theme is ‘Culture, the Key to Our Future’, focusing on the history and culture of the Silla Kingdom (57BC-AD935). The expo features a variety of history and culture programs in the forms of exhibits, experiences, performances, and videos.
The Timeless Media Art permanent displays are installed in the Cheonma exhibit hall, themed as ‘Silla: Kingdom of Glorious Lights’. Invaluable cultural assets in Gyeongju are brought to life using state-of-the-art projection and GeoBox edge-blending technology. These include Cheomseongdae Observatory, Golden Crown in the Cheonmachong Ancient Tomb, and Seokguram Grotto.
All of the displays utilise the simplified GeoBox system, installed in three small rooms, utilising low power consumption. GeoBox makes installation and maintenance easy, with images corrected via remote control and no need for PC or network connections for any image re-alignment. Six GeoBox edge-blending processors were utilized (4x M804; 2x G703), alongside 22x Panasonic MZ770 projectors, 3x PCs for content, and interactive sensors.
The first installation features floor- and wall-based interactive media art of the Golden Crown, located in Cheonmachong Ancient Tomb. One GeoBox M804 processor was used to blend four Panasonic MZ770 projectors.
The second GeoBox-powered installation illustrates the UNESCO World Heritage Seokguram Grotto, located in Bulguksa temple, across floor and mirror-arrayed wall. Two GeoBox G703 edge-blending processors bring together images from six Panasonic MZ770 projectors.
Finally, Cheomseongdae Observatory is represented by a starlit space-time crossover –illustrated alongside the symbolic print of Librarian Samguksagi. Here, three GeoBox M804 edge-blenders power twelve Panasonic MZ770 projectors to create blended images on three walls and the floor.
Gyeongju World Culture Expo is a valuable annual cultural exposition, which has attracted over 16.2 million visitors since 1998. Previous expos introduced: the harmony of traditional culture and ICT (Information and Communications Technology); Korean culture and global culture; abundant hallyu contents; and the theme of the Silk Road.
