Projector warping

If you have a surface you want to project onto but it is of an abnormal shape like a cylinder or sphere, projector warping might be just what you need as it adjusts to uneven surfaces to create perfect results.

What is projector warping?

Also called geometric correction or distortion correction, this process will make an image look visually correct on a non-planar surface or screen. Non-planar means that the projection surface has a three dimensional quality – ie, not situated in one plane.

Using a normal projector on, for example, a curved surface will give you a weird shape – also called a ‘smile shape’ – and your image won’t look like it should. This is because the pixels will be of different sizes in different places on the image. The projector warping function will adjust to any curves or shape and display your image exactly the way it should look, making it pleasant to look at. The same goes for different shapes like a wedge; in other words two flat screens arranged at an angle.

Projectors with warping Where is projector warping used?

Projector warping or geometric correction is used for lots of projection projects, professionally and at home. Not only is warping used for driving/ flying simulators and in museums, but is also used at home on screens with an angle or for education/business purposes. It can be used for anything you need and it’s easy to use.

It can be achieved with some advanced projectors with a built-in projector warping option or to control projectors with external warping attachment. It’s very useful as it can sometimes be difficult to only utilise straight projection surfaces at the correct angle and to keep your display surface flat.  At Matrix Works we sell various processor hardware for warping projector warping application, which you can find here.  For further information please use our online assistant! We also have great examples of our products on YouTube.
